Hill Cottage

GV II

Detached cottage. C18. Limewashed rubble, cob upper level, thatched roof.
Probably symmetrical block with both rooms heated, extended left by one bay, or
incorporating outbuilding. Two storeys, 3 windows, mainly 2-light glazing bar
casements, and to eyebrows at upper level. Low left, ground floor, larger
2-light sash casement 9-pane, and to right of door a 3-light. C20 door to
thatched hood on wood brackets between bays 2 and 3; cropped stack to right, and
larger stack, left, possibly external originally. To left the thatch sweeps
down in a hip and above an outbuilding, possibly a donkey house; this has plank
doors in the return, under a small rectangular opening, perhaps to former hay
loft; beyond is former doorway, now with 2-light casement with glazing bars.
Wing at back not of special interest. Interior has been considerably modified;
fireplace to left, but not in right room, some evidence of staircase by fire-
place. Roof not inspected. The cottage lies across the slope of the road and
runs back into hillside.
