Description

HALWELL
SX75SE
9/322 Milestone at NGR 789
532

II

Milestone. Circa 1824. Granite monolith. Rounded heads to splayed front
and roughly cut flat back set into bank.
The front is inscribed "To Dartmouth 7" on the right hand side and "To
Kingsbridge 7" on the left hand side (inscription below is obscured).
These directions are on the wrong wides and the 1909 6" OS map has "Modbury
9 1/2" and "Dartmouth 7". Therefore this milestone is not in its correct
position.
The Dartmouth-Modbury Trust was initiated by the turnpike act of 1824.
