Early C14 hall house, with late C15 or early C16 range along street front,
extensively in C18. Timber framed and plastered, with red plain tile hipped roof.
2 storeys, attics, and cellars. 5 window range. C18 double hung vertical sliding
sashes with glazing bars. Three C18 ground floor bay windows with a wood dentilled
cornice above. C18 Pediment doorcase and original 6 panel door. Parapet front with
wood modillioned cornice and long wall jetty. The early C14 hall adjoins at the
rear, parallel to the street with original crown post roof. Crown post has octagonal
shaft, moulded base and capital and four arch braces. The front range originally had
3 gables to the street and may have incorporated ground floor shops. Late C15 or
early C16 cellars. Good C18 and later internal detailing. This site was part of the
Manor of Thaxted, and the early hall is part of that complex. (RCHM 13).
