Formerly known as: Royal Naval Hospital: Barracks HIGH STREET Stonehouse.
Barracks at former Naval Hospital; now offices. Mid-late C18. Plymouth limestone rubble with limestone dressings, and slate hipped roof. Single-depth plan. Three storeys; five window range. Plat bands to each floor, and a coped parapet, which rakes down to the left end; plain architraves to two central cross windows on the ground floor with glazing bars, two-light casements above, a narrow blocked entrance to the right and a doorway at the left end. Rear has blind ground floor, five first floor and two second floor lights, and a tall narrow stair light to the south.
INTERIOR: has a dogleg stair from the entrance, with mid C19 mouldings.
HISTORY: outside the original south entrance to the hospital, this was used as barracks for the hospital constabulary. The details are similar to those of the nearby Stonehouse Marines barracks of the 1760s. Part of an outstanding and complete military hospital complex.
