War Memorial

II
Memorial of Portland Stone erected in 1922 to the design of Sir Reginald Blomfield. Stepped plinth with added cast bronze panels commemorating the dead of the Second World War. The body of the monument is inscribed on four sides with the names of 1286 dead of the First War. Surmounted by cornice and frieze of tryglyphs and metopes with decoration of roundels. Above is a podium decorated with the town's coat of arms and wreaths. On the podium is an 8 feet high bronze statue of 'Peace' sculpted by Sir William Hamo Thornycroft. The statue carries a myrtle branch held aloft in her right hand and an angel holding a wreath in her left hand.
