Description

TL 63 NE BIRDBROOK
4/6 Whitehouse
Farmhouse

II

House, early C17, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with red
clay corrugated tiles. L-plan with wings extending to NE and SE. Axial chimney
stack in NE wing, internal side chimney stack in SE wing. 2 storeys. SE
elevation, C20 door, 3 C20 casement windows on each floor, exterior completely
modernised. Some framing exposed internally. Jowled posts, heavy studding.
Axial beams plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops in both wings. Joists
of horizontal section unchamfered. The walls of both wings have been raised
approx. 1.25 metres above the original wallplates, and the internal tiebeams
removed or severed for doorways. The unusual plan form suggests the possibility
that originally this comprised 2 houses in a 'Unit System' group, for the
occupation of 2 households working the same land, later combined as one house.
