TL 770 377 GREAT YELDHAM
4/30 Barn approx. 20 metres
NW of Butler's Farmhouse
II

Barn, c.1600, altered in C18/19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
corrugated iron. 5 bays aligned E-W with midstrey to N. Roof hipped at both
ends. Jowled posts, curved tension bracing trenched inside heavy studs, short
edge-halved and bridled scarfs in wallplates, clasped purlin roof with curved
wind bracing. The C18/19 alterations comprise the addition of the midstrey,
the replacement of arched braces to the tiebeams by hanging knees, and the
construction of a base wall of red brick in English bond approx. 0.90 metre
high. There is some fire damage to the studs in the 2 eastern bays of the S
wall; the E end of the roof is charred but structurally undamaged.
