Ancillary building of uncertain purpose, probably a chapel, now combined with
stable block. C15, altered and extended in late C19 and C20. Timber framed,
weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 2 bays aligned NE-SW. SE
wall removed, rebuilt approx. 0.5 metre further out in C19. C19 stable of
painted brick with slate roof attached to SW, C19 and C20 extensions to SE. One
storey. The NE elevation has 3 Gothic Revival windows with diamond leading, one
plain door and a vehicle entrance. C19 door in NW elevation. Jowled posts,
heavy studding and girts, moulded wallplates, mortices for moulded covings
(missing), moulded cranked tiebeam with mortices at centre for axial beams to
support panelled ceiling, removed. Crownpost roof with axial braces, complete
except one replaced rafter. The middle post of the SE wall is cut off below the
jowl and supported by a C19 transverse beam. The S post is also cut off below
the jowl and supported on C19 structure. Inside, the walls are boarded to the
height of the girts, with exposed framing above. The high quality of the frame,
and the mouldings indicate an original use of high status; in the context of the
Manor, which was formerly held by the Abbot of Westminster, it was probably a
chapel. The C19 alterations were undertaken to enlarge the span. RCHM 4.
