(north-west side)

2/300 Tan Cottage

GV II

Cottage. Circa 1500, extended c.1950. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red plain tiles. 2 bays facing SE, with later external stack at right
end, now incorporated in large extension of c.1950. One storey with attics. 4
C20 casements, C19 plain boarded door. One gabled dormer with C20 casement to
rear. C19 octagonal shaft on stack. Jowled posts, heavy studding, cambered
central tiebeam. Shutter groove in rear wallplate of right bay. Inserted
floors in both bays, of plain joists of square and vertical section arranged
longitudinally, on pegged and nailed clamps. Stair with quarter-turn at bottom
in front left corner. Hearth facing cottage blocked, C20 grate inserted to
right of stack; tiled shoulders of stack inside extension. Brick floor in right
bay. Crownpost roof with arched axial braces 32mm thick, intact in left bay,
cut back in right bay. Rafters lightly smoke-blackened, probably thatched
originally. RCHM 7.
