2/87 Pair of Cemetery Chapels

II

Pair of chapels, 1897. Rock-faced red sandstone, H on plan, with
cross wings and central tower. Slate roof with red crested tile
ridge. Stone octagonal steeple to tower. Projecting plinth and
ashlar corner buttresses. Main windows in Decorated style; tower and
secondary windows are lancets. Labels to door and windows. Much
stained glass. Modern glazed door to central tower entrance with
Gothic head filled with reeded strips. Side doors are oak boarded
with imitation strap hinges. At the rear of the cross wings there are
octagonal apses with pyramid roofs and a modern wall filling the space
between the apse projections. A Crematorium has been provided within
this building without detracting from its original character.
