8/69 Milestone about 250 metres
south of junction with A303
GV II
Milestone. Late C18. Limestone pillar with 1840 cast iron plate
fixed to front. Raised lettering on plate: WARMINSTER / 8 /
SHAFTESBURY / 7, C & M / W, 1840 along bottom. Warminster to
Shaftesbury road turnpiked as far as East Knoyle under Act of 1726,
stone pillar has incised dated of 1787, visible below cast iron
plate, initials C & M / W represent Warminster ironfounders Carson
and Miller.
