1/12 Loftus Mill and millhouse
with mill race adjoining.

Watermill mid C18, and adjoining late C18 mill house incorporating remains
of older house. On site of medieval mill. Left-hand part of mill now part
of house. Chevron-tooled dressed sandstone; coursed random drystone
retaining wall of race. Renewed clay pantile roofs. 2 storeys, 2 windows
to house. Central 6-panel door and narrow overlight with glazing bars.
Mid/late C20 segmental-plan bay windows on brackets, on ground floor;
24-pane horizontal sashes with painted sills, on first floor. Mill has 2
doorways with keyed lintels, now holding late C20 casement windows, at left.
Similar window on first floor and loft door to right over ground-floor
window opening. Retaining wall of race, with flight of eleven steps and
stone-lined water channel, adjoins right-hand side of mill; fed mill wheel
through opening in first floor. Block kneelers and stack at left end; ridge
and gable copings. Blocked fire window in older left return of house, and 2
garret lights in gable. Continuous single-storey outshut adjoins rear of
house. Interior: house retains beamed ceilings on ground floor. Machinery
removed from left-hand part of mill; right-hand part has some early/mid C19
timber and cast iron machinery and late C19 wheel. Stables and out
buildings to rear are not of special interest. Mill house included
for group value.
