School and school house. Plaque inscribed 1867. RE and MAH Wise (patrons). Shale
rubble and granite dressings with slate and asbestos slate roofs. Schoolroom
symmetrical with 2 linked wings at back. School house L-shaped. All in medieval
vernacular style. Schoolroom is single storey of 2 bays, each with a 6-light
granite mullioned window (old photographs show smaller windows). Central door with
wooden porch on stone plinths which has segmental arch with roundels in spandrels.
Decorated gable on brackets over. Asbestos slate roof with 4 C20 skylights
(originally gabled dormers) with brick gable chimney to left. Schoolhouse gable
front of 2 storeys projects slightly. Central 3 light mullioned window with
pointed arched centre light to ground floor. 3-light flat headed mullioned window
with original leaded glazing to first floor, both with relieving arches. Laterial
stone stack adjoins schoolhouse gable. Right-hand return wall has shouldered
headed doorway with relieving arch and cross in tympanum. First floor has plaque
with relieving arch to left and hipped dormer overdoor. South wall of later wing
has window like south gable ground floor with flat headed 4 light mullion over.
Slate roofs with stone gable chimney to right. Interiors undistinguished. Wall
with gateway adjoining schoolhouse has pointed arch in freestone. Reused steps
under.
