Former generating plant, now warehouse. Late C19 for R E B Crompton. Brick with
terracotta walls with slate and glass roof. The works fronts Anchor Street and
comprises 3 bays of office accommodation on two storeys and 6 bays of factory
accommodation with full height segmental openings. Pediments to the office bays
and the factory entrance opening. Two later doors have been broken through. The
works were established in 1878 to supply electricity to the town, and in 1901
Chelmsford had the first public street lights to be installed in Britain with
power supplied from here. Listed for its association with Crompton, his pioneering
work in electricity and particularly for its aasociation with street lighting.
