Description

SW 7525 MANACCAN

7/51 Halvose Farmhouse
-
II

Farmhouse. C18, extended circa early C19 and later C19. Painted rubble walls to C18
(south) front and stucco to C19 (north) front, granite sills, wooden lintels.
Scantle slate and asbestos slate parallel roofs with central valley, hipped returned
roof at left (west), gable ends at right. Many reused C18 or earlier crested clay
ridge tiles. Brick chimneys over original left and right gable ends and lateral
brick chimney over (north) side wall of later C19 part.
Double depth plan formed by the original south facing C18 2 room house plus early C19
2 room front added behind so that the original house becomes the rear of the C19
house; like two 2-room houses back to back with through passage between. Further room
added at one end of each in circa early-mid C19 (west) plus circa late C19 single-
storey wing at right angles to left of C18 (south) front.
2 storeys. Overall 4-window south front overlooking cobbled courtyard with 1 window
C19 extension left and nearly symmetrical C18 front right with projecting gable end
of single-storey wing between. Three 12-pane horned and 1 hornless sash (right) to
first floor and C20 windows to left and right of doorway with C20 ledged door. 2-
tiers of blocked pigeon holes at first floor sill and sash meeting rail level.
Symmetrical circa early C19 3-window north front plus later C19 side wall of addition
right, slightly recessed. Plinth and rusticated stucco quoins. Porch with pilaster
antae and simple entablature but columns replaced C20 with rustic posts over stone
bases. Original 16-pane hornless sashes except horned copy at ground floor left.
Interior partly inspected. Successive generations of remodelling but essential
structure intact including large fireplace with oven in east room of C18 part.
