Description

CAMBORNE RAMSGATE
SW 63 NW
7/80
Pendarves Lodge
II

Gate lodge to former Pendarves House. Mid to later C19. Snecked killas
with granite dressings, slate roof. T-plan: 3-unit main range with
projecting wing in the centre. Two storeys, in Jacobean style, with
chamfered plinth, chamfered mullion windows and chamfered doorways;
the one-bay projecting wing (slightly higher than the main range) has a
canted front (like a tollhouse) with three 2-light windows on each floor
and a drip-mould over those at ground floor; a hipped roof; and an
extruded chimney stack in its right-hand side wall. The principal entrance
is in the angle to the left of the wing, by a porch under a catslide roof,
with a sturdy timber-frame on a chamfered stone wall and a door in the
centre. To the right of the wing the main range has a 2-light window at
ground floor and a carved shield above (an eagle surrounded by three 3-
point stars). The left gable has one window on each floor (3 and 2 lights);
the right gable has a doorway, and one 2-light window on each floor. Rear
has a one-light window at ground floor and a 2-light stair window above,
flanked by extruded chimney stacks. Interior: the ground floor of the wing
is a room which could be segregated from the domestic quarters to the
rear, presumably for the temporary reception of visitors to Pendarves
house. History: built to control entrance to north drive of domestic estate
of family Pendarves of Pendarves.
