Description

NY 24 SW IREBY

6/120 Newbiggin Grange

II

Farmhouse. Late C18 but incorporating earlier foundations. Whitewashed rubble
walls, on large projecting plinth stones, under graduated greenslate roof with
yellow brick chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays with single bay, now garage, to
right and lower 2-bay extension to left. C20 door under glazed fanlight, and
sash windows, all in painted stone surrounds. Garage has C20 opening and louvred
window above. Extension has plank door and sash windows, one in partly blocked
loft doorway, all in painted stone surrounds. Rear walls rendered. This grange
belonged to the Priory of St Mary, Carlisle, and the plinth could be the
remains of a medieval building associated with the grange.
