873-1/9/517 (East side)
12/12/53 Laurel Cottage
(Formerly Listed as:
SUTTON ROAD, Sutton Poyntz
The Laurels)

GV II

Marked on OS as The Laurels.
Detached cottage, set gable to the road. C18 or early C19.
Rubble, thatch roof. A long single-depth cottage with small
rear wing under swept-down roof.
2 storeys, 4 windows; all deep 2-light casements with
horizontal bars and in wood lintels, set to eyebrow dormers at
first floor. At the ground floor is an extra window to the
left. Slightly offset under window 3 is a C20 plank door under
thatched hood. 4 low buttresses to square tops have been built
against the front wall, and this wall appears to have been
raised in later work from upper window sill height. A lean-to
with plank door at the right-hand end, a brick gable stack to
the right and a small stack left of the door. The left return
has a 2-light casement at each level, and the back has four
2-light casements to the ground floor, and there is a small
rendered unit under the swept-down roof.
INTERIOR: has been modified, but this remains representative
of the vernacular cottages in the village.
