east of All Saints

Chest tomb and railings. 1822. For James Smelt. Tomb of sandstone ashlar
with cast-iron railings. Tomb sides are recessed between concave reveals
enriched with foliate reliefs; the ends are convex. Sides and ends contain
raised oval panels within patterned spandrels. Angle volutes enriched with
foliate reliefs. Panel on south side contains inscription:
IN REMEMBRANCE
OF JAMES SON OF
THE REV: WILLIAM SMELT +
ELIZABETH GRUNDEN
WHO DIED MAY THE 29th 1822
AGED 27 YEARS
Tomb enclosed within turned railings,approximately 1.1 metres high with
acorn tips, between chamfer-stopped square-section standards with urn
finials.
