Large country house. Late C18 with early and mid C20 alterations. Probably
by John Carr. Rendered, with grey and purple slate roofs. 2-storey, 5-bay
main range facing south, with 2-storey east-facing range set back to right
and fronted by single-storey range. Main range: central bay projects
slightly and has C20 double door in porch masking original doorway with
fanlight. Flanking and first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars
with keyed lintels. Gutter brackets, shallow hipped roof and rendered brick
stacks flanking central bay. Recessed range to right: single-storey glazed
hall has sashes with glazing bars between Tuscan pilasters. Projecting band
above cornice; blocking course. Behind the hall the 2-storey range has
9-pane sashes to first-floor. Left and right returns of main range are
canted bays under the hipped ends of the main roof. Right return of hall
has 6-panel double door in Doric porch of pilasters, columns, plain
entablature and cornice. To right again the 2-storey range has sashes with
glazing bars to ground floor, and 9-pane sashes to first floor; paired
gutter brackets; hipped roof with large ridge stack. Interior: south-facing
range - central entrance hall with fireplace installed c1955. Drawing room
with C18 imported fireplace from the Lord Chancellor's house in London;
central female mask with radiating shafts flanked by swags of fruit and
flowers; mantle shelf supported by large decorated consoles. West windows
restored mid C20 when Corinthian columns from Wiganthorpe Hall were
installed. During the restoration large Edwardian bay windows were removed
from this end of the building. C18 oak staircase with fine mahogany
handrail imported c1957 from Wiganthorpe Hall (demolished) and in non-
original form of a central flight dividing into 2. Original C18 window
