Description

CHULMLEIGH ELSTON
SS 61 NE
3/69 Thatched Warren
- II
House, unoccupied at time of survey. Probably C17 but possibly earlier fabric
concealed, remodelled in C19 and extended at right end in C20. Painted roughcast
rendered stone rubble and cob. Hipped thatch roof. Axial rendered stack and
rendered stacks at each end.
Plan: as interior not accessible, plan and development could not be fully assessed,
but may consist of a 3-room and lobby entry plan with a bay of 1 room plan added at
right end. Possibly in the C19, the house appears to have been divided into 2
occupations.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 4 window range. Gabled half dormers with 2 light casements, 6
panes per light. C19 fenestration mostly intact except to added bay. Ground floor
casements all 8 panes per light. Small window towards left end and 2 rear casements
have rectangular leaded panes. 2 rustic timber porches with half-hipped thatch
roofs. Outshut to rear left end with slate roof.
Interior not inspected.
