Large house, dated 1831 on rainwaterhead at south-east corner. Ashlar, with
low-pitched lead-clad roof concealed by a parapet, various chimneys.
Rectangular triple-pile plan. Two and 3 storeys, all one height. Mix
Georgian and Gothic style, with embattled turrets, sashed windows with
hoodmoulds. Six-bay north and south fronts both have slim octagonal corner
turrets with battlements above the parapet, which has on both fronts 2 steps
containing shields. North entrance front has wide 3-bay 2-storey symmetrical
main facade: single-storey canted porch with Gothic-style glazed and panelled
doors, fanlight with intersecting glazing bars, moulded Tudor arch flanked by
thin buttresses, and embattled parapet; shorter 3-bay 3-storey service wing
continues to right, with central door and square windows. South front to
garden all 2 storeys, a symmetrical; offset to right is a 3-bay 2-storey
canted bay flanked by turrets and with buttresses to the centre terminating
with pinnacles above the parapet, tall cross windows at ground floor, sashed
windows above; to left is a round-headed doorway with 2 glazed panels and
plain fanlight, and 2 plate-glass fixed windows at ground floor, 3 sashed
windows above; to right, one window each floor. East side wall in matching
style. Interior: lateral entrance hallway with black and white
diamond-pattern marble floor, opening onto a parallel side passages, one
containing dog-legged stone staircase. Very elaborate and complete
Gothic-style decorations (restored), principally: study, with carved ivy-leaf
openwork surrounds to windows; drawing room which has moulded plaster frieze
and cornice, carved pelmets to windows, foliated ceiling rose, fireplace with
ogee-shaped carved stone surround (crocketed and pinnacled with candlesticks
carried on pinnacles), and opposed end-wall mirrors with carved canopies; and
dining room with simpler but matching decoration and double doors with Gothic
panelling.
