Description

KNOWSTONE KIDLAND LANE
SS 82 SW
3/23 East Kidland Farmhouse
-
GV II
Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 origins, inner room end remodelled and extended in
early C19. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Asbestos slate roof, half-hipped at
right end. Brick stack at left gable-end and axial stone rubble stack with tapered
cap and drip.
Plan: probably originally a 3-room and unusually lobby entry plan, with lower end
to right. In the early C19 the inner room end was rebuilt and extended to form a
symmetrical 2 room, central staircase plan, possibly for occupation as an
independent family unit. Continuous outshot to rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 6-window range in all. Left side attempts symmetry with C19
fenestration intact, of 3 2-light casements 8 panes per light above 16 paned
hornless sashes each side of 4 panelled door. To right is a 3-light casement 6
panes per light to left of small single light windw above plank door. Another plank
door at right end gives direct entry into lower end with 2 light casement above.
Interior: chamfered axial ceiling beam to hall with hollow step stops. Lower end
still used as service end with rough cross ceiling beams. C19 joinery entirely
intact to inner room end, the entire range having been little altered in the C20.
