SX 99 NE POLTIMORE

House. Early C19. Stuccoed, under hipped slate roof with lead rolls. Front
range with 2 rear wings, and outbuildings to left-hand side. 2 storeys. Front:
symmetrical; 3 bays, the middle bay narrower than the others and recessed, the
side bays separately gabled; all overhanging eaves supported by shaped brackets;
pilaster quoins to all corners; plinth all round; 2 axial stacks. Central
tripartite entrance under moulded canopy on 4 console brackets with 2 narrow,
long side windows with decorative glazing. C19 6 panel door with 4 fielded
panels. All windows contemporary timber hornless sashes : to first floor, outer
windows with 8 panes per sash, central with 6; ground floor windows with 6 panes
to upper sash, 9 below. Left-hand side with 3 sash windows to first floor, 8
panes per sash; 4 to ground floor, 6 panes above, 9 below. Outbuildings also
contain some hornless 8-pane sash windows but with exposed sash boxes. Bampfylde
House was part of the Poltimore estate, and is very similar in design to The Old
Rectory (q.v.).
