Description

LAXFIELD BADINGHAM ROAD
TM 37 SW

5/29 Rookery Farmhouse
-

-- II

Farmhouse. C16 and C17, in 2 or more phases. Timber framed; mid C20 panelled
plasterwork with a band of pargetting at first floor level. Roof plaintiled
to front and pantiled to rear. 2 storeys. 3 windows, C19 and C20 mullion and
transom casements. Central doorway with 6-panel door and C19 doorcase with
reeded pilasters, frieze and cornice. External stacks against each gable.
Interior has considerable C19 and C20 modernisation. To the right, a former
C16 service end: on the ground floor a close-studded partition wall (which
seems at one time to have been an outside wall) and heavy plain joists. Some
exposed first floor framing and one original window with cavetto mullions.
Remainder of front range perhaps late C16: moulded bridging beam to ground
floor, the structure otherwise largely concealed. C19 stair. Small C17 dairy
wing to rear. Set forward to the right of the house a large mid C20 wing, not
of special interest.
