Description

CREETING ST. PETER WILLOW GREEN
TM 05 NE
4/77 Willow Green Farmhouse
-
- II

Former farmhouse. Probably C15, with alterations of C17. A small 3-cell open
hall house. 1 storey and attics. Timber-framed and roughcast. Thatched roof
with axial chimney of red brick, and one C19 eyebrow casement dormer. Mainly
mid C20 small-pane casements, 2 being of late C19 or early C20. Framed and
boarded entrance door with open gabled porch on posts. The open hall has a
complete smoke-encrusted coupled-rafter roof, with evidence for a gablet at
the right-hand end. Widely-spaced studwork. A cambered tie-beam from the
open truss gives evidence for thick slightly-curved braces. The parlour cell
to right has heavy exposed floor joists. In late C16 or C17 a large chimney
was placed in the cross-entry, and an upper floor with chamfered joists
inserted in the hall. The roof to right was converted to a gable in C17, with
wind-braced clasped purlins. The left-hand cell has a butt-purlin roof of
late C17 or early C18, and was perhaps entirely rebuilt.
