Milestone

II

Late C18 or early C19 milestone, with severely defaced inscription. It has a rounded face, and a curved, centrally- indented top. The milestone bears the inscription, Swindon 2 - Hungerford 14 miles; London 79 miles, alongside other illegible inscriptions. The milestone is mentioned in a work of 1884, 'The Life of the Fields' by Richard Jefferies, writer and naturalist, born in 1848 at Coate, near Swindon.
