Town house, now two houses. c1720s, with later alterations. Flemish bond brick with fine
gauged and rubbed dressings to front; cement rendered to right-hand return; rear wing of
limestone rubble with brick quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roof hipped behind parapet
to front and gabled to rear; brick stacks. L-shaped plan: front block (Highworth Court) has
2 principal ground-floor rooms heated by rear lateral stacks and central projecting rear stair
turret; rear former service wing (Highworth House), of 2-room plan with axial and rear
stacks, has early C19 one-room extension to rear extended in turn by a late C19
conservatory. Projecting left-hand bay with carriage entrance now forms part of Highworth
House, which also has flat-roofed 1956 extension (replacing earlier outshot) to right-hand
(north) wall. Highworth Court to front of 3 storeys. 5-bay front has ashlar quoins and triple
keys to segmental-arched windows with early C19 6/6-pane sashes, the keys breaking into
plat bands which are returned to side elevations; aprons to windows and rectangular and
central oval dies to parapet also in gauged and rubbed brickwork; segmental-arched doorway
with mid/late C19 six-panelled door and overlight, adjoining left-hand inserted late C19 bay
window; rear stair turret has early C18 semi-circular arched sash with thick glazing bars set
above early C19 sash; left-hand return with half-glazed panelled doors in inserted mid C19
opening. 2-storey bay set back to left, with blind window over former carriage arch, with
ashlar impost blocks and keystone touching brick plat band. Archway beneath has entry to
the rear wing (Highworth House) of 2 storeys with early C19 3-storey extension to rear.
The left-hand (south) elevation has early C18 closet set over early/mid C19 canted bay
window with glazing bar sashes (10/10-pane to centre) ; central section has fine early C18
3-light wood-mullioned first-floor window with leaded lights and wrought-iron fittings to
central opening casement, set above mid C20 canted bay window (fronting C18 opening
with segmental arch) and C20 homed sash with late C19 lintel; left-hand (west) end has
timber lintel lintel over 6/6-pane first-floor sash above late C19 canted bay window; timber
lintels over other openings, including similar fine early C18 window with leaded lights to
right-hand (north) return. Late C19 conservatory with porch and lantern. INTERIOR:
Highworth Court not inspected but noted to have retained early C18 features including
panelled ground-floor rooms and fine staircase with fluted balusters and sweeping handrail;
mid C19 alteration including inserted marble fireplace. Highworth House includes transverse
beams to ground-floor rooms; early C18 and C19 panelled doors in moulded architraves,
including 4-panelled C18 door to closet; staircase to front rebuilt probably in C20 with late
C19 reset turned newels but including C18 turned balusters and closed string; ground-floor
room to centre has reset early C18 stone fireplace with beaded architrave; roof not seen.
Decorative (probably Minton or Jackfield) tile floor in conservatory.

Tall circa 1725, 5 bay town house. Three storeys, attic and basement. Largely
blue brick with red brick bands.
Chamfered stone quoins. Band over basement and moulded coping to parapet.
Triple stone keys. Rubbed brick segmental arches. Aprons and bands over
floors. High parapet with 4 rectangular and central oval rubbed brick panels.
Glazing bar sash windows. Central mid C19 6 panel door with 3 pane overlight.
C19/early C20 2 light square bay to left on ground floor. One bay 2 storey
extension to left with slate roof, carriage arch on ground floor with stone
imposts and key and fine wooden gates.
Interior, mostly panelled rooms on first floor. Good staircase with sweeping
rail and fluted balusters, (plain after first floor) continued to roof light;
panelled dado, panelled landing below first floor.
Altered mid C19 (see inserted marble fire-place).
Two storey extension to rear with 2 storey bay. This and mid C19 2 1/2 storey
former malthouse to west now form Highworth House. Conservatory to west of
now converted malthouse. Interior retains an C18 service staircase.
