LYDNEY
Cookson Terrace, Nos 1-9 (inclusive)

(Formerly listed as Cookson Terrace, Nos 1-9 (inclusive), HARBOUR ROAD (north side))

II
Terrace of dwellings and former hotel. Dated 1858 on hopper-head. Snecked sandstone, welsh slate roof, eight very deep and narrow stacks and two smaller end stacks. A formal composition with central two bays at three storeys plus basement, flanked each side by six bays at two storeys and basement plus two bay units the same; the basements approached at the back and facilitated by fall in ground level. The end and centre two gabled units step forward c 1.5 metres from flanking six-windowed wings in which first floor windows are set to flush gablets, all gables with verges brought forward on wood brackets, and gutter carried straight across in wing sections. Total of eighteen windows, all sashes with horizontal bar (but Nos 1 and 5 with four pane sashes at first floor) in flat segmental pointed arches with flush voussoirs; nine plank doors with plain transom light over, in arches as windows, and under steep pointed slated gable porches on wood brackets.

Originally built as hotel in centre unit, and houses for railway employees of the Severn and Wye Railway. The terrace, in excellent condition at the time of survey (August 1983) is not only a striking architectural concept, but is also a significant reminder of Lydney's earlier history.
