House, incorporating part of Guildford Castle walls. Walls C13, house early C20.
Chalk and Bargate stone walls, red brick and stone house with plain tiled roof.
Remains of tower to left set back from road with newer wall attached to front and
extending to left along Quarry Street for approximately 10 metres. Gate in right
hand return wall at junction with tower. House to right, behind, and part of wall
stepping down in three stages to right, each stage with one lancet window. House
of 2 storeys with modillioned eaves cornice and segmental pediment on centre of
Quarry Street front. Sandstone surround to mullioned 2-light casement window on
the first floor, 3-light stone-mullioned window below flanked by pier buttresses
under tile coping. Old arched oak door of 3 planks with studding and strapwork
hinges in elaborate Celtic style between buttresses to left. The remains of the
castle walls are believed to be part of the outer defence wall of the Castle
complex and are part of a scheduled Ancient Monument, Surrey Monument No. 1.
