House; formerly the racehorse trainer's house at Queensbury Lodge Stables, High Street,
[qv]. Mid C18 incorporating part of early to mid C17 house; early to mid C19 alterations;
adjoining wing to east a late C18 stable block converted in mid C19 as extension to house
and altered internally in C20. C18 house of red brick painted white except for west gable
end wall; some C17 timber framing internally and in the rear wall at first floor level under
later external render; plain tile roof with coped end gables, and on front two roof dormers
with catslide slate roofs; a brick stack on each gable. Wing to east of red brick painted white;
plain tile roofwith half-hip at right hand end, and three flat, metal-roofed dormers to front
and four similar dormers to rear; a central, brick, ridge stack with two ceramic pots. PLAN:
C18 house a single depth, two-unit range facing a shallow stone paved front area, formerly
fenced with cast iron railing on plinth; end-gabled service wing to rear left; the east wing,
originally stables, projects forward to street boundary.
EXTERIOR: C18 house of two storeys, attic, and a cellar below west unit. On the front
an offset plinth, a raised band at first floor level, and cogged brick eaves cornice, on the
ground floor the entrance doorway off-centre to right with the early C19 six-panel door
with upper panels glazed, irregular fenestration with a sash to each side of doorway and on
first floor three similar sashes, all with two vertical glazing bars in openings with timber
lintels and projecting stone sills. In rear wall evidence of timber framing at first floor level.
The converted former stable range single storey and attic. On the symmetrical front a
central, segmental-arched window with projecting key-block, and widely spaced to each
side a large, semi-circular arched opening containing a fixed, arched sash with glazing bars,
both openings formerly doorways into stable range before its conversion as part of house. In
dormers to front and rear, sashes with glazing bars [3x4 panes]. West gable end wall has
raised bands at first floor and attic floor level and a small, stone framed panel set into gable.
Rear wing single storey. A white painted brick wall extends eastwards and links with no 196
Queensbury Cottage. INTERIOR: the ground floor rooms largely refitted in C20; in right
hand room a lateral bridging beam with nicked stop chamfers; in cellar a massive bridging
beam, and brick arched lamp locker; mid C19 staircase with column newel and stick
balusters; on first floor above doorway in passage a late C18 decorative glazed fanlight, and
in rear wall exposed C17 jowelled and chamfered timber posts and chamfered wall plate. In
attic exposed collar ties and purlins, otherwise roof not accessible, but probably C17. Rooms
in east wing refitted in C20.

House. C18 with early C19 alterations. 3 windows, 2 storeys and
attics. Painted brick walls with dentil eaves and parapet
gables. Plaintiled roof with gable chimneys of red brick;
monopitched slated casement dormers. C19 sash windows with flat
arches. Early C19 door, the top panels glazed. One-and-a-half
storey C18 wing to right probably built as stabling: painted
brick; plaintiled roof, half-hipped at right hand end with flat-
headed dormers; semi-circular arched C20 windows.
