Description

LANCASTER

SD4761NE CHURCH STREET
1685-1/7/77 (North side)
09/07/74 No.54

GV II

Two houses, now shop. Early C18, altered C20. Painted
sandstone rubble, rendered and lined, with ashlar dressings.
Slate roof with gable chimney stack to the right. Double-depth
plan.
3 storeys above a cellar, and 4 bays with chamfered quoins on
the right, the doorway in the second bay, a recent band above
the shop front, and a prominent eaves cornice. All the
openings have moulded architraves, and the windows have
glazing bar sashes restored in the late C20, with 18 panes on
the first floor and 12 panes on the second. Shop front altered
in keeping: the doorway original with a moulded architrave;
the window to left basically original but with a sill lowered
to ground level, while the tripartite window with square
mullions on the right is recent.
The rear has a gabled wall of 4 storeys including basement,
which has a doorway with a chamfered surround of C17 type and
a small blocked window on the right with a double chamfered
surround. On the upper floors most windows, including the tall
staircase window on the right, have architraves matching those
on the front.
