Former Peel School

GV II

School, now part of housing development. 1850. By S.Smirke,
for Sir Robert Peel P.M. Tudor style. Rectangular plan. Brick
with blue brick diapering and ashlar dressings; tile roof with
cresting. One storey; 3-window range. Ashlar-dressed offset
buttresses and coped gables. 4-light
double-hollow-chamfered-mullioned windows; central gablet with
escutcheon to panel. Right return has 4-light transomed window
under dripstone and relieving arch with quatrefoil above; left
return similar, with 2 plaques recording history of building:
date 1850 in blue brick flanking quatrefoil. Rear has small
parallel range with 2 hipped dormers; C20 porch to re-entrant
angle. Interior noted as having arch-braced roof trusses with
tracery infill.
