723-1/5/93 Lych gate to Church of St Paul

GV II

Lych gate. 1878. By EC Lee, architect of St Paul's Church
(qv). Oak frame on flint walls with stone cappings, roof of
machine-made flat tiles. 2 bays, 3 principal trusses, outer
ones with king and queen posts, having arched bracing
intersecting at subsidiary posts. Central truss with king post
and soulaces, central bracket bracing between king post and
collar. Solid braces from posts to moulded tie-beams, arched
moulded outer ones with pierced spandrels, octofoil with cross
and trefoil. Roof plates project, arched braced from posts.
Principal posts have intersecting arched bracing as in roof -
outer to inner, inner to outer, wall plate projects with
footbracing. Gate now missing. Posts have cruciform finials
with trefoil decoration. An inventive design, based on
medieval constructional techniques.
The lych gate and Church form a group.
