16/47 Village War Memorial

GV II

War memorial. Probably c.1920. Limestone ashlar. Square plan on base of 3 steps.
Chamfered plinth with moulded string course to bottom and cornice to top;
circular corner shafts surmounted by ball finials. Steep pyramidal cap with ball
finial has gabled lucarnes with blind trefoils. Raised stone panels to each
side, north inscribed with the names of those killed in First World War, west
with the names of those killed in Second World War. Panels to south and east
have inscriptions "TO LIVE IN HEARTS WE LEAVE/BEHIND IS NOT TO DIE" and "YOU
GAVE YOUR BEST/THEN LAID YOU WEARY DOWN/AND TOOK YOUR REST" respectively.
