Department store. 1939, by J.S.Beaumont. Steel frame with
cladding of Portland stone and glass. Large rectangular plan
on island site. International functionalist style. Probably 6
storeys, 7 bays plus chamfered corners, the upper floors
cantilevered out over the ground floor but otherwise without
external expression of different levels, the bays divided by
plain pilasters strips and each bay divided by narrow
full-height mullions to form 3 continuous vertical strips of
multi-paned glazing, and the centre flanked by single glazed
strips; set back parapet with metal railings. Other sides
similar. Interior altered.
