Description

LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH

SS7149 EASTERN BEACH, Lynmouth
858-1/4/70 Terrace balustrades and steps to
north and west of The Manor House

GV II

Terrace balustrades, retaining walls and steps. Late C18 or
early C19. Limestone ashlar, rubble.
A wide grassed terrace to W and N of the house is contained by
low rubble retaining walls approx 1.5m high, carrying a
balustrade with round balusters between square piers in bays
approx 2.5m wide. The balustrade begins opposite the SW corner
of the house, returns N, with a set-back beyond the frontage,
in 2 runs of 5 bays each. The N return again sets forward
opposite the house frontage, and contains at its E end a
straight flight of 13 stone steps, with a return in 2 bays
towards the house, finishing to a further flight of 9 steps,
contained by a ramped wall returned to a square pier with
weathered capping. The service range, set below the terrace
level, is contained by a wall rising to the height of the
balustrade, and returned in a segment to the NE corner of the
main range. Included for group value.
