Wall to north, east, and east part of south boundary of
grounds of Bowes Museum (qv); piers and gates at east end of
north wall. c1869. Thinly rendered rubble, with snecked
masonry to south wall. Ashlar piers, wrought-iron gates. Wall
approx 1.5m high, with gabled stone coping, runs along Crook
Street at north and east boundary of Museum grounds, returning
south to join Newgate. Along Newgate, the south boundary wall
joins the east lodge and is partly of snecked masonry with
rock-faced projecting coping and low chamfered top. At east
end of north wall two square piers with moulded plinths,
cornices, and blocking course, support wrought-iron gates
which have spike heads to uprights and dog bars, diagonal
stays to dog bars, and bifurcated curled heads to principals.
