Lych gate, walls, horse trough and
mounting block north of Church of St
Martin

GV II

Lych gate and adjoining retaining walls flanking path and
approx 60m to the E. Late C19 lych gate, older walls, probably
C18 and later; mounting block probably early C19; horse trough
1893. Slatestone rubble; some granite dressings; lych gate
with dry Delabole slate roof with shaped oak barge boards and
crested clay ridge tiles. Rectangular-on-plan lych gate with
serpentine-on-plan walls linked to wall flanking church path;
long wall adjoining left of gate, short wall to right. Lych
gate has open front and rear with 4-centred arched oak
doorways with carved spandrels. Front has pair of square gate
piers and mid C19 iron gates. Paired vents to gable ends.
INTERIOR has probably C18 coffin rest flanked by granite grid
stiles and benches. Oak waggon roof. Subsidiary features
include: 3 steps on 3 sides up to tapered landing in front of
lych gate; from this 2 steps up to mounting block on the left
built against older churchyard wall; on the right a later wall
surmounted by iron railings and left of mounting block a
granite horse trough with inscription:'PRESENTED TO THE
BOROUGH BY A LOVER OF ANIMALS'.
