Description

GITTISHAM GITTISHAM, (north side)
SY 19 NW

7/151 Barn, outbuilding, stone wall and
walls to the walled garden north
of Pomeroy House
GV II

Barn, thatched outbuilding, stone wall and walls to the walled garden. Probably C18.
Rendered barn with a thatched roof, hipped at ends; stone rubble and brick
outbuilding with a hipped thatched roof and a stack; flint rubble wall; handmade
Flemish bond brick walls to the walled garden.
The barn is sited rear (north) of the house and parallel to the main range, forming a
yard with the rear wings of the house. It has 2 large openings on the south side and
a full height blocked doorway on the rear left, it may have been a cider barn, the
rear left entrance for carts. North of the barn a smaller, thatched heated
outbuilding may have been a gardener's workshop. A section of flint rubble walling
extends along the east end of both these buildings. Further north and to the east a
walled garden with brick walls.
The barn has a loft; 2 2-leaf doors to entrances on the south side to left and right
and 2 windows; loft loading door in the centre. Pegged A frame roof trusses of an
C18 character. The thatched outbuiding has a brick west wall, it may once have been
open-fronted; on the north side there is a chamfered doorframe and C18 plank door.
Group value with Pomeroy House.
