(Formerly Listed as:

GV II

Remains of Abbey Precinct wall, now boundary to Abbey Court
(not included). Late medieval, rough squared and coursed
limestone and sandstone. A run of approx 100m wall from the S
end of Abbey Barton (qv), returning for approx 30m to a pier
at the Gloucester Road. From Abbey Barton a length of approx
6m rises to 3.5m, then steps down to approx 2m, variable, as
the top of wall only partly coped, and much overgrown (July
1991). Where stone remains full height, heavy saddle-back
copings sometimes in-situ. The return section is variable in
height, stopped to a rectangular sandstone pier to stepped
pyramidal capping. An important historical remnant from the
Benedictine abbey, the wall reappears in part across the road
in Abbey Cottages (qv).
