Mentone Hotel and attached walls and
gatepiers

House, now a hotel. c1870. Snecked red sandstone with painted
freestone dressings and irregular rusticated quoins; crested
slate roof with 3 machine-brick stacks to angle, rear and left
slope. Irregular L-plan with wing on left having lower
projecting forward-facing gable. Gothic Revival style.
2 storeys; 3-window range, with projecting gabled front to
left-hand wing adjoining central entry. Windows have pointed
arches. Hood-moulds on the first floor window of the left
forward facing gable and over the 3-light casement window
under pointed arch on the ground floor of the left return. 2-
and 3-light mullioned sashes in half-dormers to the right,
3-light to the left gable end. A set-back studded and panelled
door in the angle under slate lean-to porch is flanked by
painted ashlar canted bays; that to the left has a 2-light
sash window and hipped slate roof; that to the right has a
3-light window beneath a castellated parapet.
Left return, in Western Lane has 2 gabled half-dormers over
2-light sash windows which flank 2 small 2-light casement
windows at eaves level; 2- and 3-light sash and casement
windows to the ground floor. INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES; a garden to the front and left return has
a low rubblestone wall with painted freestone capping and
matching but painted gabled gatepiers to the right.
