Formerly known as: No.43 QUEEN STREET.
Mechanics' Institute, Free Library from 1869, Athenaeum from
1872, now offices. 1836. Stucco with parapeted roof. Greek
Revival style. 2 storeys; 5-window range, 3-bay gabled centre
with end bays breaking forward. Flat pilasters and entablature
to ground floor, top entablatures to end bays. Windows are
sashed with horns, those to 1st floor are round-headed with
glazing bars and entablatures set in panels with architraves
and paterae; larger central window has bowed balcony with iron
railing. Entrances to end bays have attached porches, paired
3-panel doors and overlights. Coped truncated gable and brick
stacks. The building was important as a forum for discussion
for townspeople who were responsible for the C19 development
of Wolverhampton.
