Porter's Lodge, now house, 1873.

DESCRIPTION:
Dwelling by Paley and Austin for the Furness Railway Company at Furness Abbey Station. It is irregular in plan, built of snecked red sandstone, and with a renewed tile roof. It is a single storey building; with a semi-octagonal centre with side wings and C20 addition to rear. The open-sided wooden porch is under a catslide roof on the west side of the lodge and encloses doorway with date and initials on a decorated lintel. The semi-octagon is lit by cross windows with leaded lights in moulded ashlar surrounds; with a string course over. The hipped roof has oversailing eaves with 3-flue ashlar stack on shared base. The lower side wing to the west has a battered embankment wall and a gabled half-dormer over 3-light mullioned window on left return. There is a lean-to on right return. Embankment wing wall links to the adjoining gateway and bridge over Mill Beck. A plaque reads 'PORTERS LODGE'.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION

Abbey Vale is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architects: Paley and Austin are a renowned partnership, with many listed buildings to their names, with many listed at the higher grade.
* Architectural Interest: The Lodge is well designed, with attractive architectural details.
* Group Value: The former Porter's Lodge is part of a multi-period site containing the ruins of Furness Abbey, as well as several other listed buildings, some of which were also associated with the railway.
