Commercial premises. c1500 core, extended C17 or early C18,
refronted c1800; C20 alterations.
Timber-framed origin, refronted in red brick, the rear wing of
brick now partly rendered; tiled roofs. Corner block of 2
storeys and attic: 4 bays to Bird Street and 4 to Sandford
Street on left return; altered 2-storey wing faces Sandford
Street.
Corner block: recessed 1960's shop front. 1st floor:
projecting sills to 6-pane sashes under rubbed-brick flat
arches; cornice beneath parapet with ashlar copings. Roof is
hipped to left and has tall ridge stack. Left return: ashlar
plinth; 6-panel door to left has 6-pane overlight and
rubbed-brick flat arch; 2 blind windows on right with
projecting sills and same arches. 1st floor as front. Wing is
much altered: double doors on left, C20 casements, dentilled
eaves, ridge stack. The east gable has a partially-exposed
principal-rafter truss.
INTERIOR: remodelled. Attic space parallel to Sandford Street
has altered 3-bay roof structure with substantial elements of
c1500. Moulded, arch-braced truss with its NW post extending
down to 1st floor: carpenters' marks, Y-struts above the
collar, curved wind brace to NW purlin; the SE principal
rafter has been cut away. 2 other queen-strut trusses to SW
have grooves or mortices for infill below and above their
cambered and chamfered tie beams; the SW end truss is
virtually complete whilst the other has lost its apex. Various
purlins, rafters and another wind brace survive. A framed
partition to NW side has a C17 or early C18 boarded oak door -
attic floorboards are of similar date.
The main truss will have spanned a tall 1st floor chamber
perhaps above a shop with domestic accommodation to rear.
