Description

HOVE

TQ2904SE WATERLOO STREET
579-1/23/135 (West side)
10/09/71 The Waterloo Street Arch
(Formerly Listed as:
WATERLOO STREET
(West side)
The Archway between Nos 21 & 22)

GV II

Archway forming the entrance to Dupont's Riding Academy,
No.11A Upper Market Street (qv), now detached structure. 1877,
restored 1986. Render over brick. Abutting No.22 to north.
Single storey, one bay. Segmental-headed archway opening with
keystone, moulded entablature and small segmental pediment;
recessed panels to pilasters with diamond motif centre of each
pier. The arch was erected by Dupont in the year that he took
over the Riding Academy, housed in the former Brunswick
Market. Whether the arch fronted an existing structure,
possibly timber-framed is not clear; the gap between the arch
and No.21 would seem to suggest pedestrian access possibly
through a postern gate. A plaque on the rear elevation of the
arch states that it was restored in 1986 by the Borough
Council.
