WALTON LE DALE
CHURCH ROAD
St. Saviour's Church of England
School

GV II

School, early C19. Stone (coursed and squared at front, rubble at sides
and rear), slate roofs. Rectangular plan, single storey, covered by 3
parallel ridges of roof which make 3 equal gables at left end; at the
right end the roof-rises to cover the front and middle ranges of building,
making a small assembly hall. Romanesque style with lesenes, Lombard
frieze (continued on the gables) and stone mullion windows with round
headed lights, linked at the level of the heads by a thin string course.
Front is 10 bays in length, and has a gabled entrance breaking forward
slightly in the 5th bay: this has a round headed door flanked by lower
round headed openings (now glazed at the heads but otherwise blocked),
with 3 stepped single-light windows above; except for a tall 2-light
window to the hall, all front windows have 3 lights; right gable has a
much larger 3-light window; left end has a round headed door with
hoodmould in the left gable, a 3-light window in each of the others, and
a small trefoil opening near the apex of each gable. Rear has 4 large
rectangular windows and 5 single light round headed windows, irregularly
disposed. This building complements Church of St. Saviour (q.v.) on
opposite side of Church Road.
