(North side) Wigton

House. Early C19 for the Matthews family (coat of arms over entrance). Snecked
calciferous sandstone ashlar with modillioned cornice and battlemented parapet
on chamfered plinth. Graduated greenslate roof with C20 brick chimney stacks.
2 storeys, 8 bays in Gothic revival style, with wings forming overall U-shape.
2-storey gabled porch has oak doors with tracery panels in pointed moulded arch
under hood mould. Gabled parapet with quatrefoil openings. Sash windows in
chamfered surrounds under hood moulds. Wing to right of similar details but of
red sandstone. Adjoining brick barn and C20 porch are not of interest. Left
wing is part of the earlier house of 1801. Incised stucco under hipped
greenslate roof. Sash windows, with glazing bars on upper floor, all in painted
stone surrounds. Further extension with C20 bay windows and adjoining
outbuildings are not of interest.
