Description

NORTH MOLTON THE SQUARE (south side)
SS 7229-7329
18/198 Clare Cottage
-
GV II
Pair of cottages, now one. Circa mid C19, with minor late C19 alterations. Coursed
stone rubble with some red-brick dressings. Gable-ended slate roof. Brick shafts.
Plan: Pair of one-room plan cottages, with integral end stacks and central axial
stack. Converted to one cottage, probably later in the C19 (when right-hand door
porbably blocked). The right hand cottage was probably a slightly later addition
(see stepped straight joint). Two storeys.
Exterior: Nearly symmetrical 2-window front; boxed 12-pane glazing bar sashes with
painted stone cills, and those to ground floor with brick segmental heads. Roughly
central C19 five-panelled door (2 beaded flush lower panels ad 3 moulded recessed
uper panels) with brick flat-arched head. Blocked doorway to far right (see straight
joint and former brick segmental arched head).
Interior not inspected.
