Description

PILTON MAIN STREET (East side)
SK 90 SW

5/130 Bayhouse Farmhouse
(Previously listed as
10.11.55 Bayhouse)

GV II

Farmhouse, dated 1684, but with considerably earlier core. The date
probably refers only to the heightening of a building which is probably
late C16. Coursed rubble with quoins and stone tiled roof. 2 storeys,
3 unit plan, with door left of centre of elevation, and various 3-light
casement windows with chamfered timber lintels, to each floor. Gable
walls each contain 2 flat chamfered stone mullioned windows with
hoodmoulds. To the rear, further casement windows, and also a blocked
fire window. On both elevations, the line of the former roof level may
be seen below the 1st floor windows. Date with initials ID on shield
to right of doorway. Baffle entry plan, with back-to-back inglenooks
separated by a wide chimney flue. Heavy timbered roof, and some close
studded partitions upstairs. Rear wing of 2 storeys and later date. Former
entrance at 1st floor level on west wall and various casement windows on
each floor, with lead glazing.
